These are some of the statistics.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children funded a study by the Crimes Against Children Resource Center in 2006 of youth Internet users. Over a period of 5 years, they found:
  • An increase from 25% to 34% of unwanted exposures to sexual material.
  • Online harassment cases rose from 6% to 9%.
  • The amount of those receiving unwanted sexual solicitations decreased from 19% to 13%.
  • 40% of all young internet users state that online predators asked them for nude or sexually explicit photographs of themselves.
  • Only the minority of youth who had been victims of unwanted sexual solicitations, sexual material, and/or harassment said they were distressed by the incidents.
  • About one-third of the solicitations led to the predator making or attempting offline contact with youth.
