Online predators have many tactics they can use against you. Descriptions of some common ones are shown below.
1. Grooming - Groomers are potentially the most dangerous and most common type of predator. They approach their target with a demeanor of a harmless, concerned adult, often giving the victim parental advice. They can listen to the victims problems for hours, establishing a bond, and after months, or even years, will subtly bring up sexuality. Their ultimate goal is to meet in person.
2. Two Minute Man - They come in, ask questions, maybe have a short conversation, then aggressively bring up sexual intentions. They throw out questions, finding out their age, gender, how many parents they live with, etc- they're ritual takes at most five minutes. If there's any sign that they won't receive the information they need, they move on to the next one.
3. Big Brother - Similar to groomers, although not quite as patient. They will also try to form an emotional bond with their target, give advice to their problems, but will only go on for a couple weeks before aggressively revealing their intentions.
4. Gatherers/Collectors - These predators collect photos and videos of child pornography and generally "recruit" from any online source they can. They can target children with low self-esteem to star in their "movies". Their approach can vary greatly.
5. Back Alley - This type of predator likes to find information without direct contact with the victim. They'll go for people that put identifying information in their profile. The next step is to find out when their prey are home and when their parents aren't, then they show up and kidnap them.
7. New Friend - These types pretend to be a young girl or boy to more easily befriend their victims. They take advantage of the fact that the internet is anonymous and the possibility to communicate solely through text.
